Abstract

Exploring the commonalities between my former home in China and my current home in the United States, I was able to create work to explore this connection. By utilizing the materials and concepts around me, I brought my eastern upbringing to the West. Suddenly, things were not so unfamiliar, what I once thought and what I now know shifts back and forth. Leaving what I knew to create something new was frightening and exciting, but it was worth the risk. I feel as if I am a kite with my family holding onto the string as bonds of tradition, culture, and responsibility. My family influences and supports me while holding me back at the same time, as I attempt to drift away from these bonds. The balance of a constant push and pull create a dynamic, yet complex relationship. With the wind being knowledge and experience, the more that I learn and see, the further I go. It was necessary to leave and let go to find what I was looking for, a new home.
