A Sesquicentennial History of Alfred University: Essays in Change

Abstract

"A Sesquicentennial History of Alfred University: Essays in Change" relates a story of shifting patterns in educational thought. But in a curious way it reveals the sinews of continuity that have stretched unbroken from Alfred's founding by Seventh Day Baptist divines to its present role as a leading exponent of professional as well as broad-based education. From these essays we see that Alfred University was the creation of many, many individuals, and that the institution's present, although closely linked to its past, remains essentially unfettered. Indeed, Alfred today stands poised on the edge of educational growth and innovation undreamed of by the founders of 1836.
