Sodium carbonate vapor firing

Abstract

Anyone who has observed a salt firing knows the white cloud which covers the immediate area with sodium chloride and hydrochloric acid. These pollutants directly and quite dramatically affect the refractories and metals associated with the salt kiln in an adverse way, and in a more subtle fashion affect the ecology of the locale. For these reasons many salt kilns have had to be shut down in urban areas or areas which have stringent pollution laws, expensive anti-pollution devices can be installed, but they are generally not practicable for the studio potter.
