Robert Littell interviews with Shimon Peres

Abstract

In 1996, novelist Robert Littell interviewed Shimon Peres. The result was the book "For the Future of Israel," published in 1998 by the Johns Hopkins University Press, which "reveals the character of a leader who participated in the birth of his country and whose thoughts remain ever on the future -- on the basis and prospects for peace. In five conversations with novelist and former Newsweek correspondent Robert Littell, Peres reflects on his youth..., the impact of the Holocaust..., what it means to be a Jew..., and the ongoing struggle to end terrorism and forge peace between Israel and its neighbors." Description

In 2016, Robert Littell donated the original interview recordings (on cassette tape) to his alma mater Alfred University. The interviews were recorded in December, 1996 with the exception of one completed in September, 1997 (in order to update the American edition of the book). The recordings have been converted to digital form but there's loss of quality in spots due to the age of the original cassette tapes. It's recommended that the published book be used to help navigate through the recordings since the text is an edited version of the interview transcripts. In addition to the original tapes, Robert Littell also donated a copy of the manuscript that has handwritten edits by both himself and Peres.
