Abstract
Polyelectrolyte adsorption is an active area of research in ceramic processing. In this study, a difference method using refractive index was evaluated as a technique for measuring polyethylenimine (PEI) adsorption on silicon carbide (SiC) and boron carbide (B4C). PEI, a cationic polyelectrolyte, was identified through the literature as an effective dispersant of SiC and B4C. Nine powders were tested for characterization, zeta-potential, viscosity and sedimentation. The results show that while the additional information collected (zeta-potential, sedimentation and viscosity) provides evidence demonstrating that the powders did adsorb PEI, the difference method through refractive index may not be suitable for measuring PEI adsorption.
