Abstract
This series of paintings documents the development of learning about my family from an outsider’s perspective on the internet while searching for my identity and origins. As an international student of 10 years away from her parents, the family has become increasingly more distanced both physically and mentally. The distance and separation awaken the urge to grasp their existence around me. I am motivated to create a series of
family portrait paintings. However, while identifying these paintings as portraits, they
lack figurative representation and recognition. Starting with collecting photos of the
family online and archiving shapes out of context from images. Then, I aim to create a
composition of balance to fulfill my inner anxiousness. At the same time, visualize the
relationship between parents and children with the challenge from unsettling paints.
During this process of piecing together my abstract vocabularies for painting, I find
myself letting go of the original narratives and exploring freely between the infinite
possibilities.
