dc.description.abstract Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) is an important piezoelectric ceramic. Although processed to yield excellent piezoelectric properties, PZT suffers from a long term aging process in which the piezoelectric properties decrease by 0-5% per decade. This means that if the polarization of PZT decreases 5% by the 1st day, it is expected to decrease 10% by the 10th day and 15% by the 100th day and so on. Many studies have been done on aging of PZT, but a single model has not been universally accepted. An motivation of this research was to use harmonic analysis to study the aging of undoped and doped-PZT as a function of time. A conventional testing method was performed along with a harmonic analysis method to study aging of PZT. In addition, different applied field and testing techniques were used for the harmonic analysis method. Results indicated that aging of some parameters of harmonic analysis follow those of the conventional testing method. In addition, results of harmonic analysis show that amplitudes and phase angles of each harmonic change uniquely as a function of time. This phenomenon results in change in shapes of longitudinal and polarization hysteresis loops with aging time. These findings suggest that harmonic analysis is a promising new method for studying the aging of PZT. en_US
